What to expect
The young modellers in ecology workshops offer a relaxed and open-minded atmosphere that encourages the exchange of experiences and ideas with other young researchers and our invited keynote speakers. The workshop is mainly directed at early stage scientists (Bachelor, Master or PhD students) who in any way are connected to ecological modelling through their project/work. Beyond this, we warmly invite anyone interested in learning about ecology and modelling to join our workshop!
This year's workshop will be held from 25th-29th May at the AWI Guesthouse Möbius on the island Sylt which is beautifully set on the north west coast of Germany, bordering the North and wadden sea, which we'll make sure to explore during our stay. We will spend the full week onsite, with accomodation and a fully equipped seminar room is reserved for us.
As focal part of the workshop, all participants should present their work e.g. for a thesis, course work or internship either as a lightning talk (5 min short summary of your project) or presentation (10-15 min standard talk) with opportunities for discussions and feedback. Moreover, if there are certain skills you could share or general academia-related topics you want to discuss with your peers, propose your own student-led workshop*. Check out our time tables from the past workshops to get an idea!

In addition, three keynote speakers will join us to introduce their exciting work, present advances in the field of ecology and get into discussion with us in special informal exchange sessions. There will be lots of options to interact with the keynotes as well as your peers throughout the week. Keynotes might opt to stay with us for the full workshop week!

The following keynotes will kindly join us for the workshop:

The participation fee for the workshop (including accommodation and meals) will be 320 € for PhD students and 240 € für Bachelor- and Master-level students.

The deadline for applications is set to the 15th of March 2026. We will send out confirmations for participation shortly after (ideally before the end of March). If we receive more applications than we have space at the guesthouse, we will review the applications and select participants to form a diverse group, offering a waiting list spot to everyone who doesn't make the shortlist right away. The participation fee has to be paid only after we confirm your participation. Please arrange your travel only then**.

Please reach out to us if you have any questions, e.g. in case you have trouble finding funding. We are looking forward to seeing you on Sylt!

Best,
Your YoMos Team

Small print info:
*Student-led workshops are supposed to be sessions where you share some interesting skill(s) with us (e.g. intro to a programming language, organization tool, presentation tips, etc.). The format is completely open. The time frame is typically between 45 mins to 2 hours. Offering a mini-workshop is of course voluntary, yet we highly encourage you to lead one since these are the true "gem stones" of the overall workshop. You can also do it as a group, in which case we can help you get in contact with other participants (just say so in the application form).
An outline of a few past workshops:
-
"The programming language Julia": Presentation of the strengths of Julia, use cases in a Jupyter notebook
-
"The model RangeShifter": Explanation of the principles of the model RangeShifter, example and use case in R
-
"Research funding": Sharing experiences and discussing possibilities, benefits and disadvantages
-
"How to defend your PhD": Explanation of how a PhD defense looks like and insights in the own defense preparation and presentation"

** Please keep in mind that our workshops usually take place in quite remote locations and travel thus might take the entire day. Our workshop will officially start on Monday evening with some icebreaker events and end on Friday before lunch with a feedback round. We hope that this gives most participants enough time to travel to and from the location!
